Debate Focus 2026

Disarmament, War and Deterrence

“The world you inherit will be shaped by the decisions made today. One day, it may be shaped by yours.”

Every day, the news reminds us that peace cannot be taken for granted. Wars, humanitarian crises, cyberattacks, nuclear tensions and emerging military technologies are reshaping the world in ways few could have imagined a decade ago. As conflict evolves, so do the difficult questions surrounding security, justice and international law.

The 7th Edition of For Not For (FNF) invites you to explore these questions through the globally recognised British Parliamentary Debate format. There are no easy answers and that is precisely what makes the conversation worth having.

Can disarmament make the world safer, or can it leave nations vulnerable? Does deterrence preserve peace, or does it make conflict more likely? How should international law respond to autonomous weapons, cyber warfare and other technologies that are changing the nature of war? Where should the balance lie between national security, human rights and global responsibility?

At FNF, you will not debate to defend a predetermined viewpoint. You will debate to understand complexity, challenge assumptions, evaluate competing perspectives and persuade with evidence, logic and conviction.

Because tomorrow’s leaders will face these questions. Today’s debaters have the opportunity to start answering them.

Think Critically. Speak Confidently. Lead Responsibly.
